Who is who: Team leader Dr. Klaus Droppelmann

Dr. Klaus Droppelmann, who are you and why did you choose to become a teamleader for SLE?

K: I’m a trained agronomist turned development practitioner with over 25 years of experience in the agricultural sector in Africa, ranging from field research to smallholder support to policy advisory services.

What is your research about and what research results have surprised you so far?

K: This year we are working on a very pressing issue looking at sustainability hotspots along Zambia’s dairy and groundnut value chains. We are collaborating with a young team of Zambian professionals based at the Indaba Agricultural Policy Research Institute (IAPRI). The exchange between the SLE and IAPRI adds a lot of value to our project beyond its scientific objectives.

What do you like best about your current job?

K: I believe the SLE prepares young professionals for the challenges in international cooperation in a very practical and hands-on manner, focusing on interdisciplinary teamwork that is becoming increasingly important. I wish we had institutions like the SLE in Africa to train young professionals in rural development. Moreover, the SLE provides a professional and enjoyable work environment.
