Tropical Day in Berlin 2023
As part of the NUTRiGREEN project and thanks to the generous financial support of the SLE Alumni Association, the two young scientists Awa Touré and Saïd Rehema from Senegal had the opportunity to participate in this year’s Tropentag (https://www.tropentag.de) in Berlin. Below is a brief summary of their experiences:
Awa Touré
“I am Awa Touré, also a student in the master’s programme Agroforestry, Ecology and Adaptation at Cheick Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar.
During the Tropical Day, I participated in Workshop 12 (“Soil and plant nutrition management”), which was interesting and where we could learn a lot. I presented my poster entitled: The effect of the dose of organic manure on the growth and agro-morthological parameters of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) in the region of Fatick, Senegal.
What impressed us most was the opportunity to explore Germany, especially the city of Berlin. The new acquaintances and many stimulating conversations we experienced during the Tropentag were also very interesting. We return with expanded knowledge and new insights that will be useful not only in this project, but also in future study projects.
Our trip was an exciting adventure during which we made numerous exciting discoveries. Only the long layover in Istanbul caused us some difficulties due to the lack of orientation aids, and on top of that we found the flight costs quite high, so we were especially happy about the financial support from the SLE Alumni Association.”
Saïd chanfi REHEMA
“My name is Saïd chanfi REHEMA, I am a student in the Master’s programme Agroforestry, Ecology and Adaptation at Cheick Anta Diop University in Dakar and a member of the Nutrigreen Senegal project.
From 17. September to 24. September 2023, we visited Germany and participated in the Tropentag 2023 conference to present our research results from the NUTRiGREEN project.
Tropentag is an annual conference that took place this year in Berlin under the title “Competitive Pathways for Transformation of Equitable Food Systems: Compromises and Synergies”. It was my first time at an international conference where scientific sessions, discussions, thematic sessions and poster presentations were held both in face-to-face sessions and via the Whova platform. A variety of fascinating topics were covered, including agroecology, food networks, transformation processes in food systems, and last but not least, the impact of climate change.
On 23/09/2023, I gave my poster presentation in an elevator pitch session entitled “Effet de dose de la matière organique sur les paramètres de croissance et de biomasse de Hibiscus sabdariffa (L.) Dans la région de Fatick” (“The dose effect of organic matter on growth and biomass parameters of Hibiscus sabdariffa (L.) in the Fatick region”).
During our stay in Berlin we were hosted by the family of Dr. Silke Stober, to whom I am very grateful as she made it possible for us to undertake this interesting journey.
It remains an extraordinary experience for me and I thank Dr. Silke Stober very much for supporting us during our trip. Thanks are also due to my two supervisors Pr Aliou Guissé and Dr Omar SARR who accompanied us throughout our research. Many thanks also to Dr Judith Henze and all the organisers of Tropentag 2023.”
